I received word I made it to the second round of W+K12.8 on a Saturday morning, while I was on vacation in Michigan. W+K12 is Wieden+Kennedy’s advertising school/agency, and out of more than 600 applicants I made the top 100. I was on my way to a wedding, and the second round required I turn in a project by the end of the day on Monday. The only problem was I didn’t have a computer, and I was flying all day Monday. Luckily someone at the wedding loaned me a computer, and I was able to spend part of my Sunday, before they had to leave with the computer, cranking out a project. Here is the result to my project’s question, “What should the role of United States government be?” I didn’t make it to the third round, but having Wieden+Kennedy interested in me as a copy writer and idea-man was enough for me. But it’s not too late for you, you can hire me today! click here to view the project
The email from W+K:
Hello what’s-your-name who wants to be in W+K12.8.
We have some good news and some bad news.
The good news is you are invited to Part Two of the application dance. This is no small feat; we had to pour through over 600 applications. 600 applications is a fuckload of applications. 600 applications makes you bleary eyed and disoriented.
600 is now 100. 100 must become 24 finalists.
We will be inviting those 24 finalists to Portland from Thursday, September 22nd to Sunday, September 25th. Yes, that is two weeks from yesterday. Yes, if you are selected as one of the 24 finalists, you’ll have to drop everything even if you are vacationing on the moon and come meet us in Portland. Yes, we will cover your airfare and hotel accommodations if you are not a Portland person.
However, if you are an extremely un-Portland person, aka, not from the US, selected as one of the 24 finalists, we will conduct your interview via Skype. You will also be responsible for obtaining a student visa or whatever kind of visa you can wrangle.
So, how do we get from 100 to 24 finalists? That’s where the bad news comes in: you have more work to do.
It’s called homework.
But you get to choose your homework. There are three homework assignments below. Choose one. Interpret it however you want. You can do an entire campaign, you can bake us a pie, you can make a video, you can make a poster, you can write a song, you can whatever–just as long as you solve the problem.
Your homework is due by the end of the day Monday, September 12.
